Introduction

Hyeonmi nokcha (현미녹차) is Korean brown rice green tea: green tea leaves blended with toasted brown rice. The rice adds a warm, nutty, roasted aroma that softens the grassy bitterness of green tea, making it one of the most popular everyday teas in Korea – you’ll find the tea bags in offices, homes and restaurants everywhere. It is similar to Japanese genmaicha, and it sits between the roasted grain teas like boricha and pure green tea.

Hyeonmi Nokcha at a Glance

What it is

  • A blended tea of toasted brown rice and green tea

Main ingredients

  • Roasted brown rice (hyeonmi) and green tea leaves (nokcha)

Taste

  • Nutty, toasty and mellow with a light, fresh green-tea finish

Main uses

  • Hot daily tea, iced tea, after-meal drink, tea lattes

What is Hyeonmi Nokcha Made Of?

Brown rice is soaked, steamed or dried, then roasted until golden and fragrant, and blended with dried green tea leaves. The ratio varies by brand – some are rice-forward, others more tea-forward. Types you’ll see:

  • Tea bags: the most common form in Korean supermarkets.
  • Loose-leaf blend: visible toasted rice grains mixed with leaves.
  • Bottled ready-to-drink: unsweetened brown rice green tea in bottles.
  • Hyeonmi-cha: roasted brown rice tea without green tea – caffeine-free.

What Does Hyeonmi Nokcha Taste Like?

The first impression is toasty and popcorn-like from the roasted rice, followed by a gentle vegetal note from the green tea. It is smoother and less astringent than plain green tea, and the pale golden-green cup pairs well with almost any Korean meal.

Easy Homemade Hyeonmi Nokcha Recipe (Makes about 1 cup of blend)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (100 g) brown rice (short-grain if possible)
  • 1/2 cup loose green tea leaves (sencha-style or Korean green tea)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the brown rice, then spread it on a towel and let it dry completely (a few hours, or pat dry and air-dry overnight).
  2. Toast the rice in a dry pan over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, for 10–15 minutes until deep golden and fragrant. Some grains may pop – that’s fine.
  3. Spread the rice on a plate and cool completely.
  4. Mix the toasted rice with the green tea leaves (about 1:1) and store in an airtight jar.
  5. To brew: use 1 heaping tsp per 200 ml (7 oz) of water heated to about 80°C (175°F). Steep 2–3 minutes and strain.

Tip: Boiling water and long steeping make green tea bitter. Keep the water just below a boil and remove the leaves after 3 minutes; you can re-steep the same leaves once more.

Where to Buy Hyeonmi Nokcha

How to Store Hyeonmi Nokcha

Keep tea bags or loose blend in an airtight container away from heat, light and strong odors; green tea absorbs smells easily. Use opened packages within a few months for the best aroma. Brewed tea keeps in the fridge for 1–2 days.

Hyeonmi Nokcha FAQ

Does hyeonmi nokcha have caffeine?

Yes, from the green tea, but usually less per cup than plain green tea because part of the blend is rice. Pure hyeonmi-cha (rice only) is caffeine-free.

Is hyeonmi nokcha the same as genmaicha?

They are the same idea – toasted rice plus green tea. Korean versions use brown rice and are often sold as convenient tea bags.

Can I cold brew it?

Yes. Put 2 tea bags in 1 liter of cold water and refrigerate for 4–6 hours.

Can I add sugar or milk?

Koreans usually drink it plain, but a little honey or milk makes a nice latte.

Conclusion

Hyeonmi nokcha is the friendly middle ground between roasted grain tea and green tea: nutty, smooth and easy to drink every day. Buy the tea bags or toast your own blend in 15 minutes. If you like roasted flavors, try our oksusu-cha (roasted corn tea) next.
